As much of Afghanistan falls into their hands, about 50 Indian diplomats and activists have left their Kandahar consulate in the face of Taliban demands, according to Indian media.
Taliban fighters are rapidly taking control of key areas of southern Afghanistan around Kandahar, as well as creating major security concerns in western Afghanistan; In this situation, India has taken this step to remove diplomats and staff, NDTV reported.
The Indian embassy in Kabul said on Tuesday it had no plans to close the embassy and consulates in Kandahar and Mazar-e-Sharif.
Earlier, India's foreign ministry said it was closely monitoring the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan and its impact on the safety and security of Indian citizens.
"We will take action as per the situation," ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told a news conference on Thursday.
The United States and NATO have called for the withdrawal of all troops from Afghanistan by August, ending nearly 20 years of war. In this situation, violence has spread across Afghanistan.
Amid India's growing concern over the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, Afghanistan's Ambassador to Delhi Farid Mamundzai on Tuesday briefed Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Schringler on the situation in Afghanistan.
Last week, the Indian Embassy in Kabul advised all Indians traveling, living and working in Afghanistan to avoid all unnecessary travel and to take utmost care for their safety.
They described the situation in Afghanistan as "dangerous" and warned that Indian nationals could face "serious threats" such as abduction.
